While there are many assets you need to be successful in business, there is an emerging trait that suggests a consistent success-rate: conscientiousness.

It basically just means being thoughtful and thorough, being a meticulous planner, and having rational head in times of crisis. It means working hard in the present to prepare for the future when things might go wrong. Above all, being conscientious has also emerged in breakthrough research as being one of the key ingredients for success in business and influencer marketing.

There’s actually an incredible amount of research to back up this link between conscientiousness and success. A National Institute of Mental Health study found that conscientious men earn higher salaries, while the National Institute on Aging found a link between conscientiousness and income and job satisfaction. Other studies show that conscientiousness is often the most important factor for finding and retaining employment. Being a conscientious person it seems, is a key ingredient for living a balanced life as well as succeeding in business.

Being Conscientious at Work

But what does this trait look like in a business? Well to start, conscientious people are better at goals: setting them, working toward them, and persisting despite obstacles. If an overly ambitious goal can’t be realized, a person with this trait will switch to something more attainable, rather than getting discouraged and giving up. As a result, they tend to achieve goals that are consistent with what their employers want, or with what the industry demands of them.

Research shows that arriving on time, doing thorough work, and being thoughtful toward your colleagues helps people regardless of their job function or workplace situation. It would be hard to argue that being on top of deadlines is considered to be a universally a good thing.

How Does That Help in Influencer Marketing?

At the end of the day, how does being a conscientious person translate into influencer marketing?

  1. Planning: content market success is all dependent on planning. Conducting market research, establishing target audiences, and creating an outreach strategy is all about the planning. Being conscientious of logistics can make planning a whole lot easier.
  2. Goal Setting: marketing is made infinitely more attainable when you set tangible goals for yourself and your business. Be conscientious in your goal setting by breaking down aims into weekly, monthly, and annual goals, with measurable outcomes that can be tracked and celebrated.
  3. Keeping Calm: marketing requires adaptation when things aren’t going to plan. Maybe trends have changed, or Facebook has updated their algorithm and thrown off your outreach plan. Maybe your messaging just isn’t resonating in the way you hoped. No matter what happens in content marketing, keeping calm and being flexible are key things a conscientious business person will be able to do.
