It has been proven time and time again, and we’ll keep on saying this: email marketing is still effective and sending email newsletters should still be a part of your marketing strategy. It still is one of the most effective and personal channels to be in touch and communicate with clients and leads – much more than social media sites.

But before you start with your email campaign, know a few important things when you write awesome content in your email.

  1. Ask for permission

Don’t you just hate it when someone takes something of yours without permission? Same goes for unwanted or uninvited emails. So when you make a list of who you are going to send your marketing email to, make sure they are those who have actually given you permission to receive from you and are welcoming you to send stuff to them.

In order to get subscribers to say yes, you could do the following:

  • Invite people to subscribe through a subscribe button on your website. Make it attractive and something they won’t miss.

  • Have an online competition among subscribers. This way, if they want to win, they have to be an email recipient.

  • Aside from clicking on the subscribe button, you could let your visitors fill out a form in your website. Include allowing you to send emails periodically.

  • Give stuff away. People love free stuff even if they won’t have an immediate need for it. Send them free stuff if they subscribe.
  1. Create stunning emails

One way to attract and keep your subscribers is if they see a wonderfully crafted email. An all text email will surely invite unsubscribers so put on your creativity caps and roll out that stunning email. If you’re not artistic enough to create one, you could use some online tools like Litmus and Sendlane. These can guide you into creating professional-looking emails by using customizable templates, adding photos, trying different layouts, adding links, etc.

  1. Suit them up for mobile users

Believe it or not, mobile users will overtake the number of desktop users. Marketers should be wary of this alarming piece of data and take it into consideration when they write awesome content in their emails for mobile users. According to Litmus’ State of Email, 54% of email is now opened on a mobile device.

So before you think of your subject line or graphics and email template, imagine how your mobile readers will open your email. If they can’t see it, it will get deleted.

  1. Personalization is still the most effective method

It’s going to be tough sending out to hundreds and thousands of email subscribers without getting personal. But you have to and it’s not at all impossible. First name personalization has proven to have an increase in Click Through Rates.

  1. Spend serious time on your subject line

This is the deciding factor whether or not the recipients will open or neglect your email. If your subject line doesn’t cut it, it will be tagged as spam and won’t get into the Inbox at all. Consider this study by Hubspot on the most clicked subject line words. Top words include: posts, jobs, survey and week’s.

So use both personalization and careful subject line words to invite your target audience into positively reacting to your email.

  1. Know what spam filters do

The introduction of spam filters have greatly screened out what many don’t want to see in their inbox. Before you write awesome content (subject and content), know first what spam filters are and how they weed out the bad eggs for readers.

  • If an IP address has already been flagged as spam by a recipient before, it will most likely do the same now.

  • Spammy words are sure to be heading toward the spam folder. Avoid words like Discount, Cash, Sale, Free, etc.

  • Filters capture subject lines that are in ALL CAPS or have exclamation points.
  1. Use an innovative Call-To-Action

Your CTA is one way to move your readers to doing what you invite them to do like clicking on a link, testing out your product, buying your product or downloading an eBook, etc. Learn the art of creating a great CTAs that inspire and motivate and not just sound sale-sy and promotional.

That’s a wrap

Marketers have to learn the hard way that email marketing works but not with trickery and deception. Yes, it has to be done carefully and strategically, with a sense of personalization. Remember, you want to reach out to your subscribers and communicate with them. Fret not, there are many email marketing trends and email metrics that you should be updated with always. You never know what you need to be focusing on at the moment. And you could miss out on a great opportunity to reach those elusive but potential clients.
